How to make a resume? Kayak helps you get started!

It is important to have a good resume, because recruiters look at this before reading your cover letter. Through your resume, recruiters get a good impression of who you are, what you do, and what your qualities are. But what makes a good resume? And what information should not be missing? A resume is often quickly viewed, so it is important that your resume is clear. You don't want long texts, but rather a complete overview of all your skills, work experience, and diplomas.Read in this blog how to create a good resume and what should be included.

Start by structuring your resume by creating different sections. This contributes to a clear overview. You can use the following headings:

  1. Contact Information

  2. Introduction about Yourself

  3. Work Experience

  4. Education

  5. Skills

  6. Extracurricular Activities

1.       Contact Information

In the first section, you put your contact information. Here are the details you should include:

  1. First and Last Name

  2. Date of Birth

  3. Address

  4. Phone Number

  5. Email Address

  6. Driver's License B: yes or no

2.       Introduction

After formulating your contact information, write a brief introduction about yourself in the next section. Introduce yourself based on your qualities: positive characteristics that distinguish you and that the client may benefit from.

3.       Work Experience

Make sure to list your work experience in order from present to past. List the jobs you have had one after the other and mention your position during the period you worked there. You can also mention important tasks or skills you learned there. If you have had many jobs, choose to only list relevant work experience for the specific position.

Do you have no work experience yet? Then you can choose to talk about school projects, where your qualities were highlighted. You can also choose to expand on the extracurricular activities section.

4.       Education

In this section, list both completed educations and educations you are currently pursuing. It is important to organize your educations in chronological order, starting with your most recently completed education or the education you are currently pursuing. Mention the name of your education and the educational institution where you are studying or have studied. For your high school education, it is important to indicate the level, and don't forget to mention that you obtained the diploma.

If you have written an interesting thesis or completed a minor, it is advisable to mention this under the respective education. Any mentions of Cum Laude distinctions or other certificates obtained should also be added.

 5.       Skills

Under this section, mention additional skills. Think of IT skills, Excel, experience with Photoshop, and language proficiency. General computer skills like Word and PowerPoint can be omitted. Choose skills that set you apart.

6.       Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities include relevant activities besides  study and work, such as volunteering, training, courses, board positions at a (sports) club, and freelance assignments. Mention the associated qualities and what you have learned from them.

7.       Photo

You can choose to include a photo of yourself on your resume, but this is not mandatory. If you choose to use a photo, make sure it is a professional photo.

 Last Tips:

  • Double-check that you haven't forgotten anything

  • Check thoroughly for spelling errors

  • Ensure a neat layout

  • Do not exceed a resume of more than two pages

  • Have your resume reviewed by someone with more experience
